Founded in 1931, bel canto chorus adult performance chorus is southeastern wisconsin's oldest continually performing arts organization. The group is made up of approximately 100 volunteer singers who are all community members with a passion for singing and sharing their gifts. They volunteer their own time, talent and treasure because they believe in bel canto and want to share it with the larger community. Each season consists of four major concert series performed in some of the most beautiful venues in the greater milwaukee area. Bel canto chorus performs seven total concerts per year which reach approximately 3,000 patrons. The chorus has also been fortunate to be broadcast by milwaukee public television on a regular basis allowing the chorus to reach countless more individuals not only in wisconsin, but across the country due to their use of you tube and national broadcasts. bel canto chorus's outreach program is made up of the senior singers program and the bel canto boy choir. The goal of bel canto senior singers, for members of the community 55 or better, is to bring the physical, emotional, and social benefits of group singing to those in the community in their golden years. The program currently has two sites with approximately 100 participants with plans to expand the program in the future to give more members of the community the opportunity to receive the great benefits this program provides. This program not only provides an arts program to those that might not otherwise have access due to physical restrictions but also helps participants age with dignity and better overall health. The bel canto boy choir allows talented young male singers in grades three through twelve the opportunity to perform while growing musically and socially within their own peer group. The program emphasizes the development and understanding of singing skills through the teaching of musical concepts, theory, aural training and sight singing at weekly rehearsals. The group performs independently as well as with the other groups of bel canto chorus on an annual basis. They have also had the opportunity to perform with the vienna boy choir, chorknaben boy choir, and midwest vocal express.
