The american butter institute (abi) is an arlington, virginia-based trade association for manufacturers, processors, marketers and distributors of butter and butter products. Its mission is to promote and protect the interests and welfare of the industry. The association's 27 member companies market approximately 90 percent of the butter manufactured in the united states.
The american butter institute (abi) was organized in february 1934 to uphold constitutional, lawful and reasonable conditions in the creamery industry, to bring about economical operations, and to eliminate competitive abuse and waste based upon sound reason and experience. Additionally, abi was organized to give proper protection and care to the milk and cream industry by encouraging manufacturers to handle the production from the farm with the highest science, and to ensure sanitation and purity while considering the wants and needs of the consuming public so that the product is presented in a positive manner.
