The organization's goals include maintaining the highest standards of the practice of interventional pain mgmt by fostering education and training in interventional pain mgmt and establishing and maintaining criteria for the designation of board certfication in interventional pain mgmt and competency certification in areas related to interventional pain mgmt.

The organization formed in 2006 to provide certification exams for physicians in the field of interventional pain mgmt. In 2014, approximately 67 people took exams to maintain high standards in the practice of pain mgmt.
