A financial literacy curriculum and job internship program that is unique to the entire state of Kansas. By combining financial literacy with internships, students put theory into practice, and gain a unique learning opportunity. As the only school in the state of Kansas, and the first Catholic high school in the nation to have this program, we are able to offer students top-of-the-line finance and banking curriculum and career track. The school?s Academy of Finance is a currriculum that develops leaders for the future. The outcome is outstanding: 95% of last years graduating class is attending college this year. R ecognized by the National Academy on Wall Street, Bishop Ward?s Academy of Finance is structured to teach students at every stage of their high school career about financial literacy, business skills and entrepreneurship. Currently, there are 100 students enrolled and learning what they need to know for successful careers in business and finance. Student Run Business?a living classroom: Students have developed a business plan for operating the school?s Spirit Shop, a retail outlet that sells uniforms, mascot apparel, and alumni mementos but this store is unique in that it is managed and staffed by students. They do it all. For example: (1) The students conducted research and discovered a niche that needed filled. They developed a business plan and are successfully managing a retail outlet in Wyandotte County that sells religious gift items. (2) The Entrepreneurship Class is working with operations and marketing, (3) The Advanced Placement Accounting Class (Accounting III) works with the financial management of income and expenses (computing and evaluation of the cash register tapes, etc.) of the overall store. Theory is put into real-world practice in this living classroom laboratory! After Five Years ni nety-nine percent of the graduates are in college. What a great return in investment!
