The wolcott land conservation trust, a volunteer, community-based nonprofit organization, acquires and preserves open space and natural habitats to sustain the rural character of wolcott. Our properties provide opportunities for education, recreation and appreciation of natural spaces.
The wolcott land conservation trust benefits the residents of the town of wolcott by preserving open space and allowing for its accessibility to wolcott and it's surrounding area's benefit. We have a hiking trail that is recognized as a blue blaze trail and is part of the ct forest & park association list of trails. We participate in their annual trails day event promoting hiking and seeing the open space available throughout the state. Expenses include advertising in local paper for our trails day and organization in general we support the local high school by giving a scholarship each year and work with local high school students offering volunteer opportunities for them to learn about and assist in the maintenance of our properties. the wolcott land conservation trust worked on improvements of one of our properties to create a more appealing area for nearby reseidents to view the lake owned by the land trust. The area was cleared of weeds and stone was put down to prevent reoccurrence of weeds for easier maintenace in the future. Also per the state of ct need to hire a dam inspector to inspect dams on our lake. This cost was reinbursed by the hitchcock lake association, which leases our lakes and oversees their activities. our board member voluntarily set up a website to give better visibility to our organization and the areas available for people to take advantage of our open space and learn of the properties we have. For 2017 he downloaded all of our prior documents for easier accessibility for our board and more transparency for our website viewers. Costs are annual webhosting fees.
