To promote and encourage the success of women lawyers by providing members with information and support, by fostering connections among women lawyers, and by monitoring and celebrating the successes of members and women lawyers at-large in our community.

Awla luncheons - there are a wide variety of issues and subjects covered, including legal matters of interest to attorneys, social programs, and matters of interest to all women. the state awla committee provides a liaison between the awla state organization and the southern chapter. Some awla functions require cooperation between the state organization and the southern chapter steering committee or membership. Members of this committee often work on state sponsored awla functions. the appointments committee monitors the process for judicial appointments and provides support and information to awla members and others applying for those positions. Some of their activities include monitoring the judicial selection and interviewing and providing mock interviews for the candidates. the newsletter committee produces the monthly southern chapter newsletter, writes articles for the newsletter and solicits information and articles from membership and others in the community. the scholarship committee provides oversight to a variety of scholarships sponsored by awla, helps generate funding for those scholarships, and is involved in selecting scholarship recipients. the social committee creates and organizes special events designed to give members the opportunity to meet outside of work. Some call it "networking", but members know that the relationships fostered not only provide professional benefits, but personal satisfaction. After all, the attorneys and judges you add to your circle of friends are ultimately colleagues who understand the pleasures and pressures of practicing law. the continuing legal eduction committee arranges continuing legal education seminars at which members can learn from other members. The committee works cooperatively with other organizations to co-sponsor programs. The committee also collects and maintains a list of members who are interested in speaking opportunities and serves as a resource for other organizations looking for speakers, giving members the chance to become recognized speakers in their field of expertise. the community service committee selects and oversees short-term projects that do not require an ongoing time committment - just a desire to get involved and meet others with similar interests. Examples of community service activities include participating in the breast cancer race for the cure or habitat for humanity projects.
