Programs

The club race is the largest revenue raiser held annually in june at watkins glen international raceway. This program provides wheel to wheel amateur racing for members that have completed formal licensing requirements and whose cars meet specific safety and class specification. Drivers are required to wear a fire retardant one piece driving suit, gloves, socks and shoes along with an approved snell sa rated helmet. There is no prize money and the emphasis is on having fun in a competitive event. To ensure a "proper attitude" among competitors, a "13/13" rule applies that puts a driver out of that event and on probation for 13 months should they be involved in an incident that involves car damages (even if it's limited to their own car). Cars are classed based on weight and horsepower. The event is staffed by zone region volunteer members that provide registration, tech inspections, staging, scoring. The track facility and its professional flagging staff are rented by the zone. The zone 1 club race is a 3 day event and one of over 25 such racing events throughout the usa and canada. the "48 hours at the glen" is the second largest revenue raiser and is also held annually in may or june at watkins glen international raceway. This program provides 3 days of high performance driving education for members with the purpose of improving driving knowledge and skills. Drivers are classed as to driving experience at five different levels: instructed (green, yellow); intermediate solo (white); advanced (black); instructor (red), and are on the track only in their specific run group. Participants are required to have proof that their cars were safety "teched" by an approved facility prior to the event. The cars are also given a trackside "final tech" inspection (wheel lugs, brake lights, throttle response, secure underhood items, all loose interior items removed, and approved helmet). This event regularly has about 200 participants. In 2012, a 3rd day was added for intermediate to instructor level drivers. this event consist of two activities - a car show (the concours) and a rally, held on two separate days. The principle object of the concours is to show the car in its most perfect condition. The idea is the car starts out perfect and the judges, who are zone 1 members, find something amiss--points are then deducted. There are various concours judging levels: full, touring, "top only- and people's choice. Zone 1 presents full and people's choice levels at this show. The event promotes member's knowledge of porsche model originality and tests detailing ability which provides friendly competition among members. The rally is run on paved roads at legal speed. This is a time-speed- distance rally. This requires members to follow a course of instructions and speeds to arrive at a designated location at a certain time. A simple safety inspection is made before the start to check normal state safety items - head, tail, brake, turn and parking lights, tires, wipers. Both events promote camaraderie and friendly competition among members from different regions within the zone 1. The event is generally held in may at various locations in the massachusetts/connecticut/rhode island area. The event regularly has about 100 porsche cars competing. the zone 1 autocross is an annual event is run in august at ft. Devin, mass. Autocross is a low speed, precision driving event that emphasizes car control and handling. Cars run through a pylon-designated course on an old airport taxiway in a timed competitive event. Cars run and are timed individually. There are no pre-event required tech inspections but a safety tech inspection is performed at the event. The only required piece of special equipment is a helmet. This event regularly has about 80 - 100 participants.
