Although reimbursement for services rendered is critical to the operation and stability of baptist memorial hospital-union city, it is recognized that not all individuals possess the ability to purchase essential medical services, and further, that the mission of baptist memorial hospital-union city is to serve the community with respect to providing health care services and health care education. Therefore, in keeping with its commitment to serve all members of its community, baptist memorial hospital-union city provides the following:(see schedule o, pg 70 for continuation)--free care and/or subsidized care where the need and/or an individual's inability to pay coexist,--care provided to persons covered by governmental programs at below cost, and--health activities and programs to support the community. These activities include wellness programs, community education programs, special programs for the elderly, handicapped, medically underserved, and a variety of broad community support activities. Baptist memorial hospital-union city program services included as of september 30, 2017 included:--the skilled nursing dept. Provided 7,446 patient service days at a cost of $12,809,716. --the radiological dept. Performed 51,337 procedures at a cost of $3,705,827. --the lab dept. Performed 189,532 procedures at a cost of $2,146,077. --the pharmacy dept. Provided 14,774 pharmacy adjusted patient days and dispensed medication at cost of $2,206,304. Baptist memorial hospital- union city serviced 2,333 inpatients and provided 71,368 outpatient visits during the fiscal year 2017. Baptist memorial hospital-union city provides care to persons covered by governmental programs from which the hospital receives payment at less than market value reimbursement. Recognizing its mission to the community, services are provided to medicare, medicaid and uninsured patients. To the extent reimbursement is below cost, baptist memorial hospital-union city recognizes these amounts as charity care in meeting its mission to the entire community. During the year ending september 30, 2017, the un-reimbursed value of providing care to these patients was $136,371,140. Charity care is also provided through many reduced price services and free programs offered throughout the year based upon activities and services which baptist memorial hospital-union city believes will serve a bona fide community health need. In addition, baptist memorial hospital-union city has a rehabilitation facility with "state-of-the-art" equipment and a professionally trained staff. An example of the equipment available to the patients is the balance master system, which is used to retrain balance. In addition, baptist rehabilitation offers speech therapy. Baptist memorial hospital-union city has provided physical therapy and rehabilitation for more than 30 years. The staff at baptist memorial hospital-union city have partnered with area nursing homes to enhance treatment plans in regards to palliative care initiatives. The hospital has opened inpatient hospice beds and worked with area nursing homes to establish hospice care in their facilities.
