The mission of the abp is to develop and provide reliable procedures and to implement processes for national certification in adult, child and adolescent psychoanalysis for qualified professionals to ensure post graduate clinical competence in the core competencies of psychoanalytic theory and practice, and to conduct ongoing assessment of such core competencies and the certification processes.

Certification: abpsa offers national board certification examinations that evaluate a clinician's ability to present their psychoanalytic work in terms of basic competencies. All examinations are conducted in a blind fashion. Certification is granted when an applicant has demonstrated the satisfactory understanding of psychoanalysis and competencies to effectively conduct psychoanalysis. For fy2016-2017: the january 2017 examination had 14 adult examinees and 3 child/adolescent examinees and had a 85% and 100% pass rate. The june 2017 examination had 8 adult and 1 child/adolescent examinees with a pass rate of 75% and 100% respectfully. research & development: research focusing on the ongoing assessment and quality improvement of the certification process. The research committee is doing ongoing research on the certification process collecting and analyzing data from current and past examinations, as well as developing future research projects. other programs such as registry: current fellows are listed on the registry which is searchable by the public. The registry contains certification dates, psychoanalytic education, as well areas the public find helpful such as specialties client focus, treatment approach and if they accept insurance. The registry is updated regularly as new fellows are added or removed. Credentials are verified, and licensure reviewed.
