The organization sponsors an annual training conference regarding current topics in the field of emergency management. Amem sponsored its' 57th annual amem fall training conference, september 17-20, 2017. Approximately 335 members from emergency management, law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical services, public health, voad members, state and federal agencies,and business and industry attended this conference. Training included two state certification offerings: "tabletop exercise writing workshop- and "grants management empg, shsgp, and e-grants. " amem again sponsored an exercise "back on track: railway hazmat incident. " the conference also provided homeland security updates for from the state department of public safety and the division of homeland security and emergency management, as well as a threat assessment from the state fusion center. Attendees also attended general sessions on "passion 8 steps to reignite yours", "dakota access pipeline (dapl) protests: impacts and lessons", "got conflict? Find your conversation peace", and "a perfect storm - lessons learned from an act of terror on the ohio state univerisity campus. " there were also a wide variety of homeland security and emergency management concurrent sessions, and vendor display opportunities. The association continued to utilize its' "emergency management elected officials handbook", and conducted several sessions on the role of elected officials in emergency management throughout the state in 2017. The association promoted individual and jurisdictional emergency preparedness throughout the state, and participated in task force/coordination meetings with such state agencies as the minnesota dept. Of health, the minnesota dept. Of military affairs, the minnesota state advisory council on homeland security, the minnesota dept. Of transportation, and the association of minnesota counties. The association also worked to establish and maintain partnerships and relationships with federal, tribal, state, and non-governmental agencies, institutions of higher learning and the private sector; and enhance professionalism of emergency management in minnesota through training programs, iaem standards and programs, promotion of the emergency management training center, and development of an ahem website resource library. The association worked to advocate to promote the passage of railroad safety legislation; new state eoc; emergency management performance grant (empg) and other grant sustainment efforts at the federal level; and orientation of legislators and tribal governments.
