Allen Gould Youth And Family Learning Association, Inc.

Mission

Operating under the name New Futures, we empower and support DC’s neediest youth in their quest to achieve economic self-sufficiency by completing post-secondary education. New Futures partners with nine highly-respected community-based organizations (CBOs) which nominate their most deserving young people to our Selection Committee and continue to mentor those students we select throughout their post-secondary career. We provide financial assistance for vocational programs, which are rarely supported by other types of financial aid, as well as for 2-year and 4-year college degrees. New Futures was recently selected by the Catalogue for Philanthropy as one of the best small non-profits in DC.

Programs

Our major program involves the provision of financial aid to low-income youth for post-secondary education. Students are nominated by our partnering community-based organizations based on financial need, individual character and commitment, performance in completing high school or a GED, and the soundness of their educational and financial plan. Students are mentored throughout their programs of study and provided with the support they need to succeed. Since our first scholarships were awarded in 2001, we have granted 123 scholarships totaling more than one million dollars.

Demographics

New Futures supports very low income youth who have completed high school or obtained their GED, and have demonstrated the ability to overcome obstacles to achieve their goals.
