Adam j. Lewis preschool supports its students in a holistic manner in order to promote their full development. Guided by a "3-pronged approach for lasting success," the ajlp program focuses on three key areas: school, home, and future. 1) the preschool provides each child with an innovative, enriched, high-quality preschool experience that strengthens both cognitve and character skills. The program, which spans the full calendar year, is child-driven; emphasizes both the process of learning and the mastery of skills; and recognizes each child as an individual. Ajlp takes a "constructivist" approach to learning, drawing on the best practices of montessori, piaget, and the reggio emilia approach. The curriculum encompasses language and literacy; math, numeracy, and logic; art and music; social and emotional development; and physical development. Large group instruction is combined with small group instruction as well as independent learning time. The preschool rests on a core foundation of faculty-all nurturing and highly skilled educators-who foster warm, positive teacher-child interactions. 2) as the children are most successful when there is a strong, consistent partnership between parents and teachers, the preschool works closely with parents to help them reinforce and extend eductaion at home. Throughout the year, faculty engage with each and every family in a process of reciprocal learning-connecting daily during drop-off and pick-up times; during biannual parent conferences; and at monthly parent workshops, where 100% participation is expected. Most recently, ajlp has held wonderful parent workshops on the topics of learning through music, summer enrichment, and educational opportunities beyond the preschool. Ajlp has also partnered with local organizations to provide families with further support. Child first-the preschool's social serives consultancy-and the bridgeport child advocacy coalition refer children to the program; lead workshops for parents; and provide counsel in difficult family situations. 3) the preschool works with all graduating families to find the best kindergarten program for their child, and to help the children successfully transition from preschool to primary school. To date, students have gone on to attend the unquowa school, with which ajlp has established a close, continuing partnership; easton country day school; new beginnings family academy; achievement first bridgeport academy; and the horizon enrichment programs at greens farms academy and sacred heart university. The preschool has further established a formal feeder relationship with bridgeport's east end academy-a k-5 program modeled on waterside school-opening september 2018. Each year, the families and schoolteachers of ajlp graduates report that they are mature, enthusiastic, and well-prepared learners, with exceptional academic and social-emotional skillsets.
