Development of educational programs for youth and adult tenants that will nurture youth through the creation of positive activities for them to pursue and improve the cohesiveness of the community. Some of the programs undertaken by andy street in the fiscal year were:social entrepreneurship: to teach middle and high school students about the world of social entrepreneurship. Covering three modules, students learn about the foundation of creating a successful business to the implementation phase of their idea. Students engage with one another in business cohorts and sharpen their oratory and written skills while thinking creatively and critically. By the end of the course, committed students will have created non-profit organizations and businesses replete with fiscally sustainable business models. Healthy cooking: growing, cooking, and eating fresh foods are a necessary means to responsible living. Bringing healthy foods into the classroom can increase students' awareness, appreciation, and knowledge of healthy eating. Research shows that children need to be offered a new food a number of times before they accept it, and as such, we work to expose students to a variety of positive food choices with instruction provided by award-winning chefs. Over the course of 6 weeks, students learn the basics of food preparation with the goal of cooking simple healthy meals for their families and friends. Youth leadership development: andy street provides leadership training for middle and high school students through simulated and real-life projects that arise in the areas of employment, civic/community responsibility and family life. Professional guest speakers from different careers and backgrounds act as mentors during the instructional training. Students learn the skills of cooperation, analyzing, problem solving, evaluation and implementation. Andy street jazz angels: andy street partners with the non-profit organization jazz angels to improve the quality of life through jazz education, performance, and community awareness. Professional musicians educate children in the appreciation of america's true art form by giving them the tools, encouragement and platform for live jazz performances with other children and accomplished musicians. Holiday gift and dinner celebration: during the winter holiday season, gifts and dinner are provided for close to 100 families from the north long beach area.
