AFOP has been an advocate for migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the United States since 1971. AFOP member agencies administer programs that upgrade farmworkers skills and provide essential education. AFOP's Health & Safety Dept. has several programs to improve farmworkers health. Farmworker Occupational Health & Safety Training Program provide pesticide safety and heat stress education to farmworkers and their families. LEAF Certification Program is a pesticide safety program which educate farmworkers and their families how to avoid take-home exposures. Most farmworkers earn less than $14,500 per year from what is often backbreaking and dangerous labor. Federal law allows children as young as 12 to work unlimited hours in agriculture, when in any other industry, twelve year-olds are protected from work. AFOP's Children in the Fields campaign strives to improve the quality of life of farmworker children by advocating for federal child labor laws in agriculture.
