Advocates for Children matches community volunteers with children who are victims of abuse and neglect. After extensive training, these Court Appointed Special Advocate or CASA volunteers are appointed by the courts to act as independent investigators and work with the other professionals on the case to determine what is in the best interest of these children. Our volunteers spend time with the children weekly, talk with the people involved in the children’s lives, such as parents, foster parents, teachers, doctors and therapists, and serve as a consistent and caring adult during a chaotic time. They report their observations and recommendations to the judge, who uses this information to make decisions about where a child should live and what kinds of services and treatment are necessary to help a child overcome the trauma experienced. CASAs also help connect families to community resources and provide children with opportunities to participate in fun activities that can help them feel “normal” again.
