The Expanding Caring Families Program supports Angels efforts in San Diego County to recruit, train, and support families who foster children, newborn to five years old. This is an ongoing program as Angels aggressively works to recruit additional families while supporting and retaining our existing ones. Having more families who will foster allows us to serve more infants and toddlers who need help. At Angels, we serve the youngest victims of child abuse and neglect and place only one child or sibling set in each home, ensuring they receive all the love, attention, and care they deserve. Our families willingly commit to the stable care of each child until otherwise decided by the County or the Court. Our model of care greatly differs from traditional foster care where a young child may experience living in five different homes in their first year of life and becoming further traumatized by the very system that is supposed to safeguard them. Research clearly demonstrates that repeated broken attachments (i.e. moves) to a primary caregiver during the critical first three years stunts normal brain growth and healthy development. Making these children more prone to significant mental health issues (anxiety/depression) in additional to challenges with attachment and bonding. Imagine as a young child waking up and not knowing where you are because every few months you are moved to a new home with new parents. Or imagine being fearful of the ring of a doorbell because every time it happens it means someone is coming to take you away to another home and another family. Our program stops this endless cycle of instability and provides every child in our care a loving, safe, and stable home to grow up in.
