WQED was America’s first community-supported television station and went on the air on April 1, 1954. The station is part of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and airs the national program schedule as well as locally-produced programming. WQED’s nightly program, OnQ Magazine, covers stories with long-form, insightful features about issues facing the region. Other programs include Black Horizons, the nation’s longest-running minority affairs program; Dave & Dave’s Excellent Adventures that highlights the people of the region; and QED Cooks, which features recipes sent in by viewers hosted by WQED’s Chris Fennimore. Rick Sebak’s local documentaries in the Pittsburgh History Series and national specials for PBS are known nationwide for their unique formats and styles. The War That Made America was a four-part series on the French and Indian War that aired nationally on PBS in January 2006 and showcased western Pennsylvania’s important role in a conflict that led to the American Revolution.
