Yorkshire playhouse provides live amateur theatre performances to patrons living in the york ne and surrounding area. Four to five full-length productions are presented each year. In addition the playhouse underwrites a childrens' theatre project each summer involving forty to eighty area children and many of their family members in a live theatre experience. The playhouse also works in partnership with york college to provide an off-campus venue for aspiring actors technichians and educators to work within their chosen field of study. All board members and officers are unpaid volunteers.

Children's theatre program - this program involves approximately 50 children both on stage and behind the the stage. All aspects of the live theatre experience are explored including acting, stage presence, lighting, sound, set construction, costuming and makeup. The program involves many parents and family members as well. The program runs four to six weeks each summer. At the end, a full length play is produced running four performances that are open to the public. Children who participate come from a number of area communities. After age 16, the participants may continue with back stage activities. Upon graduation from high school, former participants are eligible to apply for scholarships (described elsewhere) to be used for college expenses. scholarship -- each year graduating high school serniors who have participated in the childrens' theatre program are invited to apply for scholarships to be used for their college education. Scholarships are not restricted to a particular high school as any prior participant is eligilble to apply. The student is not restricted as to their course of study - they may pursue college majors that are not necessarily arts related. The amounts may vary but in this fiscal year scholarships were awarded totaling $2000. community theatre -- the yorkshire playhouse produces at least four main stage live productions each year. In addition there is often a holiday show produced that is not part of the subscription program. Virtually all the proceeds are used to cover expenses. There are no paid employees and officers are entirely unpaid volunteers.
