Mission

The african/african historical society's mission is to preserve african american history and culture through collections and programs that promote scholarly research and public use. The african/african american historical museum's mission, as directed by the society, is to educate and promote understanding and appreciation of the african diaspora through collection, exhibitions, and programming.

Programs

The organization operates the african/african-american historical museum in fort wayne, indiana (allen county). The organization has 86 members (including family, senior and corporate members). The organization served 1596 museum visitors in 2012, and served many other individuals through outreach programs (schools, speaking engagements etc). Other activities in 2012 included: --12th anniversary celebration--attendance of approx 200 people featuring local talent and entertainment --annual trip to muhammad ali center, louisville, ky 28 participants --hosted jackson family reunion tour of museum --participated in "be a tourist in your own hometown" with 428 participants --collaberation with "history makers" school program at smith academy for boys (80 students) --participated in amnesty day celebration on august 18, 2012 --organization's newsletter issued to circulation of 250+ --various school presentations during black history month
