The mission of the American Foundation for Animal Rescue, Inc. (AFAR) is to operate a community animal shelter to service the cats, dogs, and citizens of Queens County, New York City, educate and inform the public about companion animal welfare issues, responsible companion animal ownership and care giving, the link between domestic violence, child abuse and animal abuse, the importance of early behavior evaluation and obedience training for companion animals, the necessity to spay and neuter companion animals to prevent overpopulation which leads to abandonment, cruelty and euthanasia, and that companion animal ownership and care giving is a lifetime commitment.
