The association of veterinary laboratory promotes continuous improvement and public awareness of veterinary diagnostic laboratories by advancing the discipline of veterinary diagnostic laboratory science. The aavld provides avenues for education, communication, peer-reviewed publication, collaboration, outreach, and laboratory accreditation.

Members (1,100+) have the opportunity to benefit from bi-monthly publications referred to as the "journal of veterinary diagnostic investigation" (jvdi), quarterly publications of the aavld "newsletter", aavld annual directory, attendance at the annual meeting to exchange scientific findings, the latest developments in testing and equipment, timely information on specialized topics and guidance for improvement by specialized committees, and a list-serve discussion forum. the association of veterinary laboratory provides accreditation through ongoing laboratory training. the association of veterinary laboratory foundation will support student scholarships, residency programs, and research programs in diagnostic medicine.
